I suggest a hybrid approach.  Hard drives for operational backup and 
tapes archive.  I haven't used them myself but LTO tapes look attractive 
for this (100/200 GB capacity).  If not, then DAT or DLT, though this 
will require multiple tapes to hold 100 GB.

In terms of archival lifetime, any reasonable format will be good for 
five years -- if you're not concerned with preserving the data for 
decades/centuries, your life gets a lot easier.
