[svlug] TV Tuner card for Linux

All,
I am looking for a TV-Tuner card for Linux to use with Freevo or
MythTV. I've found plenty reports that the Hauppauge PVR250/ME/350
series are working well and are well supported under Linux.
Unfortunately they are also quite expensive.

Does anyone here have any alternative recommendations or first hand
experiences with other cards than the Hauppauges? I would like to hear
about them.

Also is mpeg hardware encoding really necessary? The machine this baby
would go into is a MicroATX with an AMD XP 3000 and 512 Megs of ram,
and will be running Suse-9.1 Linux. I mean there should be plenty more
CPU power in the box than can possibly be on the card, right?

I am not afraid of hacks to get this all working smoothly either but in
the end the system has to pass the "wife" test.

Thanks for your thoughtful responses :-)

Roland
