KDE has a nice "kiosk framework" they're working on in the 3.x version.
It's a little rough around the edges, and tedious to set up, but it's
getting much better.

I set up a Linux-based public access terminal (web browser) for a local
store.  KDE and Konq and a calulator (Kalculator? ;) ) are pretty much
all that are available, as well as a "Clear Cookies & Cache" button I made
(just a script that runs DCOP to tell Konq to wipe itself clean).

No way to mess with icons, browse the filesystem, etc., pretty much. :)

Might be good for "moms" and "grandmas", as well as for kids.

And yeah, it does auto-login, so the folks at the store just turn it on and
it works :)
