Try this one: 

1. While NOT running X, make a backup copy of the old configuration:
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.old.1 
(or something similar)

2. As root, run XFree86 -configure. X will autoprobe your system and
come back with something like this:

Your XF86Config file is /root/XF86Config.new
To test the server, run 'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new'

3. Run the test as requested. If the hardware works OK, then
cp /root/XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config
(You *did* make that backup, yes?)

Then you can learn how to tune your XF86Config file, and if you make a
mistake, well, you've got a good copy in your root's home, eh?
