[svlug] compiling a source deb with additional compiler options

I want to compile libssl with compiler optimizations for ultrasparc, on
a Sun UE2 running woody.

It is easy to run something like: "apt-get -b source libssl0.9.6" but
how do I get the compiler options in?

I tried just downloading first, then manually adding "-mv8" to the
CFLAGS in the Makfile(s) but it doesn't keep them when I then build it
with "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b".

How can I do this?
