Make sure that you modprobe the sound module appropriate to your system
Make sure that the speaker cable is attached to your sound card, and
moreover attached to the correct connector on the sound card.
Set /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer, /dev/sound, /dev/cdrom (or such of these as
exist on your system) to 0666
You may also need to see where /dev/cdrom is symlinked to and correct it.
The acid test for sound is, as root,
workbone -d /dev/<whatever_your_cd_rom_drive_is>
Hmmm, and do make sure you have an audio cd in the cd drive.
