Possibly it's because cdparanoia will need root privileges to read
from the cdrom device. On the other hand, I can put an audio cd in and
rip individual tracks using Konqueror's audiocd: feature so perhaps
permissions are not an issue.
Some distributions will put certain restrictive permissions though on
devices like cdrom. It could be that it's set to mode 600 and only
would allow read access by owner (i.e., root).
Mandrake's device entries, for instance, are quite
convoluted. /dev/cdrom is a link to a device with read-execute
permissions which is in turn a link to the actual device name,
which has 600 permissions -- however the owner is'dfox'. You didn't
mention which distro, so take that with a grain of salt.
