I disagree.

If you stay rigidly within the guides provided you by Red Hat, their
distro works for suitably low values of the term.  But change,
updating, and maintenance are a pain.  That IMO is suffering.

Debian takes away some of the training wheels.  But they also build a
bike that's stable by design, to stretch the analogy.

Having gone from RH to Debian, I distinctly recall learning far more in
my first six months of running Debian -- largely because the system was
accessible and didn't respond in strange and unpredictable ways -- than
I had in 2.5 years of running RH.

That's discipline (on the part of Debian, though it's spelled
P-O-L-I-C-Y), not suffering.
