I suppose one could mount the drives as read-only, and run with a
reasonable sized ramdisk for the writable area. tmpfs in swap may also
be useful. As others have stated, bootable CDs are also an option, as is
network booting.
A hardware device such as reborn isn't neccesary with Linux. From the
web page you listed, it seems to be a Windows product anyway.
