There are quite a few useful options not mentioned in the default
exim.conf.

I suspect you are reading the docs for Exim v4 when you have v3
installed. Woody, runs Exim v3. I'd also recommend grabbing a copy of
Exim from /testing as there are few useful differences that haven't made
their way into /woody as of last I checked.

This happened occasionally, but never for more than a day or two that
I've seen yet.
