Followup:

One thing I forgot to mention is that despite the reasons against
opening your source that I explained, I fervently believe that in
most cases it still makes good sense to open your drivers.  As
long as you are willing innovate fast and stay ahead of the
competition, and if you provide good service and support that
makes your customers *want* to buy your product, and if you can
keep your costs reasonable, then you can expand your market into
the linux space by having open source drivers.  But if you open
your drivers, do the right thing and get them into the kernel
tree.  

Another reason to go buy products from companies that do open
their source.  Make it profitable for them.  If the dollars are
there, they will come.
