[svlug] Mandrake in a client server setting

I was going to recommend Mandrake for our Linux distribution (desktops)
but my coworker, who is going to have to maintain the desktop systems
here, is worried that he cant provide a repository with additional
software because Mandrake installs auxilliary software in places like
/usr/bin /usr/lib. 

So, for a situation where some of the software has to be maintained in
one central place (a server), can I still use Mandrake? Or do I need to
consider some other  distribution like Suse or RedHat?
