  thanks,

  no it doesn't make any difference, it still freezes the cat
/dev/hdc|od, syslog says (normal reading of cd using cp or tar works
with no problems!):

Mar 25 01:24:49 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Mar 25 01:24:49 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30
Mar 25 01:24:52 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Mar 25 01:24:52 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30
Mar 25 01:24:55 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Mar 25 01:24:55 localhost kernel: hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30
Mar 25 01:24:55 localhost kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete

 and cdparanoia is very slow, the following messages are in syslog:

Mar 26 00:00:11 localhost kernel: hdc: lost interrupt

  don't know what would be the equivalent of cat /dev/hdc in windows but
at least audio ripping works fine under windows so it's not hardware
problem (entirely)

  brief search of internet didn't reveal anything relevant, I am not
sure what to search for though. I found a message claiming that velocd
(tdk) works fine under linux... not sure if it was referring to exactly
the same model (mine is TDK CDRW321040B)

  any other ideas? TIA!
