[svlug] question about Cutting partition

I have a 20 gigs ATA harddrive and it only has two partitions. One is / root and the other is swap. Only 4 gigs of the / root partition is being used. Is it possible to cut the / root partition to create a seperate 5 gigs partition without hurting anything? If yes, how can I do it?
