Well, it appears the PAE extensions get you more than 4GB total in the
system, but no more than 3 GB per process which seems to be the whole
problem...

| using a kernel compiled to support 4GB+ and suffer the performance hit,
| or live with the memory limit and run the big sims on Sun. The latter is
| the best solution for my company (for now).  Can't wait till Itanium is
| a good option.
