The vast majority of them have some experience with C
on Linux, which comes from their college exp. They
also have strong math/science backgrounds.

approx. 9-12 months

The exact skills aren't that big of an issue. I know
that sounds odd, but most of them will go on to work
somewhere else. I have had these engineers "gifted" to
me through an arrangement with one of my firm's
business partners. So, I'm mainly focused on doing
something for the benefit of OSS, since it has done a
lot for me.
With that said, I was thinking about having them write
tiny utilities that would make Linux easier for
novices or basic training software. For example, I've
been doing a lot of work with new Linux users who are
experience with Windows. So, I've been gathering a
list of common questions. I was thinking about writing
small utilities that address each of the
questions/make the transition to Linux easier.
Thank you,
Akbar
