Well on my Dell Dimension 4500S using RedHat Linux 7.3, and thanks to
Linux Kernel 2.4.19 and enabling agpgart, I was able to use cvs to
download the latest XFree86 4.2.99 (# cvs checkout xc) and get a
patially working X-windows that refreshes itself on the log-on screen
(RedHat Linux 7.3 VESA does not). I am basically restricted to either a
maximum of 1024x768 at 8bit or 640x480 at 16bit. So I play dvds with
ogle full-screen at 640x480. The strange consistent thing is when ogle
is finished playing the dvd and I log out to a log-on screen, amazingly
I get refreshed to 1024x768 at 16 bit where it stays until I reboot and
play another dvd. All I know is that in my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I do
have "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" for the resolution; which partially
explains why this happens. I think XFree86 is getting closer at least
to getting a decent 2D driver for the i845 graphics chip.

I would be interested in any other thoughts on this topic.
