This is a tangential answer, and not exactly applicable to you, but it
has a general utility that solved laptop sound problems for two people I know
this week:

Get a knoppix iso and boot it.  See if sound works.  If so, see what it
loaded, and use that.

SuSE and Knoppix both use 2.4.x kernels and KDE 3.  So it may not be so far
apart for finding a solution.
