OTOH, in areas in which there was *no* significant bookstore presence,
B&N/Borders is a plus. Fifteen years ago the complaint was the same,
but the offenders were Brentano's and Crown Books. Pulp for the masses,
but hardly quality books.
On which note, my own bookstore circuit includes:
- Cody's Books, Berkeley (Telegraph Ave and 4th St.). Literate,
general bookstore, with strong technical section.
- Stacey's, Market St. in SF, and Cupertino. I miss the Palo Alto
University St. bookstore something awful.
- Stanford University Bookstore, previously noted. Solid stuff, in
spades.
That's about my list. I turned up a list of the top 25 bookstores in
the US, and note with some shock that most are familiar to me from local
travels: http://www.bookmarket.com/top500.html
I'm also aware of other bookstores in the area which rank highly
(Kepler's, for example, is two stone's throws from where I sit,
literally), but they don't feature tech strongly, which is
understandable given the bulk of coverage and time-sensitivity of the
material required.
