Top directly tells how much memory is being used by each
program; press "M" to sort the listing by memory usage, and
"f" to see more fields.

X on my SuSE 6.4 system is using 35MB of memory with 29MB
in RAM when viewing one desktop, but switching to another
desktop with more windows changes the usage to 37MB with
32MB in RAM.

Netscape does slowly suck up memory. I just kill and restart
it once a day (or if it freezes).

I've got 186 processes running in 8 kde desktops, including
23 konsoles, 5 xterms, 20 Midnight Commanders (mc), RealPlayer,
slrn, mutt, and sundry other stuff, in 64MB of RAM. The system
(including X) has been running continuously for 60 days
without rebooting.

I love Linux!
