[svlug] A strange question... underclocking CPUs

Hi,

I have a question that perhaps you could answer.

In this day and age of cheaper and cheaper CPUs, I would like to know if I
can do the following. I have a SuperMicro dual-CPU motherboard that can take
CPU multipliers between 3 to 7.5. Currently, because I bought the system at
a time I had little money, I got only 1 400 MHz PII. The motherboard was
designed to take the highest speed CPUs at the time, which were 750 MHz. Bus
is 100 MHz.

Right now, there is a $20 difference between 750 MHz PIII's and the 800 MHz.
(Between the 700 and 750 MHz: $5; the 650 and 700 MHz, $14) Too much to
warrant the question I have. But by the time I can afford an upgrade CPU, it
is possible the 800, 850, or maybe even the 1000 MHz CPUs may be within a
few dollars in price.

So my question is this: Could I buy a CPU and underclock it? That would give
me the most options for upgrading later on. Could I buy a 133 MHz bus CPU
and put it into a 100 MHz bus motherboard?

To say the least, these must be amusing questions. For up until a year or so
ago, overclocking would have been the question. But now basic speeds are so
high, underclocking becomes a question.

Thanks,
Kevin
