A lot of people (especially Americans) seem to have the problem of
understanding that things (nominally) addressed _to_ them do not
necessarily exist for their sole benefit. Thus the people who post
their problems to Linux newsgroups, asking that all answers get e-mailed
because "I don't read this newsgroup". And the people who send their
problems to _us_ off-list, as if we were a no-charge private tutoring
service.

It's always seemed to me that one of our main goals in running mailing
lists like this one is to perpetuate and build a _community_ and a body
of knowledge. So, most of the time, I'm answering in the hope that some
of the discussion will be useful to others. As do others, I'm sure.
But there will always be some list-members who refuse to "get" that
concept.

Like one of my recent correspondents, in fact:

Well, I certainly don't see that that is "unfortunate", but rather
the reverse: I try to post for the benefit of the on-line Linux
community. It's interesting, but there are many Americans who cannot
seem to understand this concept, but insist despite any contrary
evidence that posts in reply to theirs must be _all about them_.

   > He's a pompous ass in my opinion....

Yes, that immediate resort to gutter-level name-calling was exactly
what made your (brief but noisy) campaign so amusing.

However, it's possible some of us have been a little grouchy. Only one
more day of rolling blackouts until the weekend, folks! Hang in there.
