I forget exactly when I got it (I think it was just under a year ago), I
purchased an external modem (I believe it has a TI chipset) from CompUSA
for $60.  The model is an Archtek Smartlink 5634TS; I'm not sure if
CompUSA still carries it or not.  http://www.archtek.com/allmodems.htm has
a description of it and a link to purchase for $59.99 plus shipping.

It supports v.90 and x2.  I have had zero problems with it under Linux.
