I missed the beginning of this thread, and this may seem silly, but could
you have forgotten to compile/load line printer support in your kernel?
This is separate from the parport/parport_pc option.  When compiled as a
module, it's called lp.o It's enabled under the "character devices" section
of the kernel's xconfig.
