I'm using Red Hat 7.1 and gnome has several helpful GUI things for
networking. They all SUCK!
I reloaded fetchmail, no help. Then used fetchmail -v -v and saw
that for some reason unknown to me, fetchmail uses localhost! And looking
further localhost was broke. Ping didn't look good to localhost.
So got out Linux Network-HOWTO and at 5.6 Configuring your
loopback interface, I redid everything as this book shows. Found that the
idiot Gnome thing had not made a route for lo! Or it must have removed it
for some reason unknown. Anyhow I used:
# root add -host 127.0.0.1 lo
and now ping got usec speed to lo instead of milliseconds. Now fetchmail
works and I'm happy. Lesson learned. Don't use the nice GUI crap that's
written by the Gnome people. Much of it doesn't work. Do all networking
with the files themselves.
