[svlug] rsync errors

I'm getting persistent erratic failures under rsync:

  # rsync --archive --verbose --recursive --devices --delete -e ssh \
    --exclude /proc --stats --timeout=600 --one-file-system \
    host:/path /path

The --timeout=600 is a recent addition. The erratic behaviour
occurs with it present or not.

eg:

  # rsync --archive --verbose --recursive --devices --delete -e ssh \
    --exclude /proc --stats --timeout=600 --one-file-system \
    host:/path /path
stderr is not a tty - where are you?
  receiving file list ... done
  ...some number of files here...
Read from remote host bush.kanga.nu: Connection reset by peer
  unexpected EOF in read_timeout
  unexpected EOF in read_timeout

  # rsync --archive --verbose --recursive --devices --delete -e ssh \
    --exclude /proc --stats --timeout=600 --one-file-system \
    host:/otherpath /otherpath
stderr is not a tty - where are you?
  receiving file list ... done
  ...some number of files here...
Write failed: Connection reset by peer
  unexpected EOF in read_timeout
  unexpected EOF in read_timeout

The number of files transfered is fairly random -- occassionally in
the thousands, sometimes less than ten. strace'ing both sides
across a failure reveals that both ends get some flavour of SIGPIPE
(and thus the connection reset message) but there's no clear reason
for either of them to ever get a SIGPIPE.

There are no entries in the system logs on either end, even at .info
level for the error (I see the SSH login and then nothing).

Google is not being much help.

  Local system:

    $ uname -a
    Linux koala 2.4.5 #1 Fri Jun 22 02:06:27 PDT 2001 i586 unknown

  Remote system:

    $ uname -a
    Linux bush 2.4.0 #1 SMP Thu Feb 15 11:57:26 PST 2001 i686 unknown

And yes, I have plenty of disk space. There's 20Gig free on the
target partition.

Both systems are running ReiserFS on the respective paths. The
2.4.0 box is running the latest 2.4.0 ReiserFS patchset (I need to
upgrade).

Ideas?
