While I agree that C is a two edged sword, it also affords one the
potential to write very secure and efficient code. The problem is the
power inherent in the C language exposes novices to the prospect of
shooting themselves in the foot, as you say.

It seems to me that a central theme of the open source movement is to
maintain personal control over _your_ computing environment. Programming
with C (and using gcc as your compiler) gives you total control--which is
probably why so many open source programmers favor the language.
