[svlug] debian patch

Hello;

Last week (or was it two weeks ago) I attempted to install debian from
a CD. I eventually gave up on the CD and tried the http source. That
was an immediate success. The installer grabbed everything off the web
and I was a happy camper. Now I have to get the system setup and running
the software I want. I find some things quite different about
debian than some of the other unix's I am familiar with. Where is
chkconfig? for example, and I am still getting used to dpkg.

Off to the real problem...

I am trying to get the latest version of libgdbmg installed on my shiny
new debian box. I went to
http://packages.debian.org/stable/devel/libgdbmg1-dev.html
to get the latest version of libgdbmg1 and try to do a build. When I
try to patch the source I run into problems. Am I doing something wrong
here?

% pwd
...src/gpm-1.17.8.orig/upstream/tarballs/gpm-1.17.8
% patch -p1 <gdbm_1.7.3-26.2.diff
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
patch: **** Only garbage was found in the patch input.
%

I tried downloading the patch file again but I get the same message.
Do I need to apply the patch to the binary? Or, is the diff file broken?

Thanks

Vince
