To be honest, I'm surprised more people aren't *leaving* the Bay Area
(or the rest of CA). For many technical jobs (I would not venture to
say "most", but certainly a measureable fraction), fulltime
telecommuting is a viable option.
Contrary to popular belief, the Bay Area is not the entire world (though
it is arguably the center of the world....) For on-site work, you might
be better off looking in the Raleigh/Durham NC area to begin with, or
perhaps Reston, VA. Not as far to move, lower cost of living (at least
in Raleigh).
But I'm biased, having made the move last year and built a house -
something I could not have done in SJ.
