Not true at all:

I did come across LILO's root=current later which simplifies things
a fair bit.

You couldn't do this with the SMP "test2" kernel, as I think they forgot
to strip it out or something, but test3 works just great. I don't think
it's small enough yet to use mkbootdisk, or a standard 1.44Mb floppy.
Anyway, this solved a problem I had rather nicely.
