Beware that installing a new version of lilo will also try to touch
/boot/boot* files. The Debian packages which have fucking huge
problems (the biggest being the incompetance of their maintainer), get
updated about once a week.

Also specific to Debian users: if you don't like how every upgrade of
lilo "accidentally" introduces a bug that overwrites your lilo.conf,
chattr +i /etc/lilo.conf.
