http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/files/linux_06.cfm has a link
to ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/linux/2001/beta_1_2_0/readme.txt ,
which may be useful to you. (Please note that this binary driver is for
XFree86 4.x, on IA-32 only.)
The
ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/linux/2001/beta_1_2_0/mga-1_2_0beta.tgz
archive's "readme" file is in MS-Word format, which is never a good
sign. Most of the source code modules appear to be proprietary for lack
of licence terms. (Which might be accidental on their part. You might
want to call their attention to this.)
As a generality, it's best to avoid buying hardware that requires (or
functions well only with) proprietary driver software, if feasible.
**COUGH** NVIDIA ** COUGH **.
