You'll note the subtitle at the bottom left:

Autotools."

Well, it is the state of the industry that makes the problem difficult. Many
platforms, OS's and libraries, and versions of libraries... This complexity
is good overall and a symptom of creative endeavor and competition--despite
the consequences that confront developers.

My first impression is that Autoconf and Automake greatly simplify an
otherwise daunting task. When you think about how well the Autotools actually
work in practice--I think it is a refreshing breeze in a somewhat chaotic
environment.
