[svlug] ppp over ssh anyone?

so i can connect to my workstation behind the company firewall with ssh
and then start an X session which will display remotely on my attached laptop
but what i really like to do is run some sort of ppp over this connection so i 
can run X ON my laptop and just access my email, files etc via the ppp connection

i know that this must have  been done before, but my searches on the web do
not find anything, any pointers or clues would be appreciated.
