Look again. There are several biotech firms in the Berkeley / Oakland /
Emeryville area advertising GNU/Linux and Unix positions. There's also
UC Berkeley itself, and LBL. All have significant compute requirements
and budget constraints which make GNU/Linux an attractive option.
Craig's List (http://www.craigslist.com/) is one of the undersung local
gems.
Might also try knocking around Sendmail or SleepyCat.
Berkeley to SF isn't a bad commute on BART. There are a number of SF
GNU/Linux / Unix listings.

BART will get you to Fremont down the East Bay, as well as other
environs easterly. I've known extremely sick minds who've biked to
BART, BARTed to SF, biked to CalTrain, Trained down the Penninsula, and
biked to the office. Not my dream commute.
