There's always twm if you like spartan. I tend to prefer WindowMaker as
balancing utility and footprint. For comparison, my X processes (two
currently), a WindowMaker, and a twm session. Note that X itself is far
larger than either WM's footprint.

No. We rasterize the framebuffer.
Generally, this is Not Done. It may make a certain amount of sense when
running an application in "kiosk" mode -- eg: a netscape window, or a
remote access tool such as VNC, but for general use, it's a pain.
