[svlug] ADSL works somewhat

Hi Terrio,

Well if the ppp handshake is working then I suspect it is not a data
transmission problem. Web lookups taking forever tends to indicate
that DNS isn't working properly. Check your '/etc/resolv.conf' and
make sure that you've updated it to point to your new name servers.

Generally I do my network debugging the other way around though.
Rather than assume that everything is working and starting from the
top of the stack, I tend to start from the bottom. Try pinging
your gateway (or the other side of your PPP link.) If that doesn't
work then start tcpdump and watch the ARP records to see if you are
getting any replies and make sure that the request is going through
the correct network card. (And if that doesn't work then test the
local side of the PPP link, and your local ethernet address to see
if you can ping your local interfaces.)

There are so many opportunities for misconfiguration of PPP over an
ethernet link that I wouldn't assume the problem is in the wire link
until I could prove it. (For instance you could have added your
default route pointing to your ethernet card instead of your PPP
end-point.)

Cheers,
-kls
