On the 2.2 kernels, you _can_ apply the LFS patch to gain effectively
unlimited file sizes.  The main drawback is that the NFS v. 3 and ext3
patches alter the same stretches of kernel code, so it's difficult to
have both sets of patches at once.  Some people have managed to pull
this off, however.
