Congrats on successful kernel recompile and installation.
Butou cannot mount tape device!
To use the tape try
mt -f /dev/st0 status
mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
mt -f /dev/st0 eject
tar cvft /dev/st0 /home
to backup your /home
and read mt, dump, tar etc. man pages
