Did you see the Win CE applications ? They seem pretty good looking.
I doubt that Linux will be able to compete with X and tvm only...

I believe palm is working on a palm pilot which can also be used as a phone.
The ipax has a lot of features ( including mp3 player , voice recorder ... )
but no phone ;-)
