The Lucent WaveLAN/Apple Airport cards transmit 30mW.  The following
site lists a range in feet (in open space) of between 500ft and 1750ft
depending on speed:

That's without any kind of external antenna.  Lucent offers both a 5db
gain omnidirectional antenna specifically designed to attach to this
card <http://www.wavelan.com/products/productdetail.html?id=10> as well
as the various previously referenced outdoor directional and
omnidirectional antennas up to 14db gain which require connector hacking
but should work fine witht he card and would probably remain within the
FCC limits.
