Guesswork while I wait...

Well, I still don't *necessarily* understand - I would expect the patch to
address the upacked tar file, which creates /usr/src/linux. Ignoring
linux.vanilla, I mv'd linux to linux.17p1 and applied the patch successfully.
Seems like a safe guess on my part - please advise if I've done something else
stupid.
