[svlug] file descriptors

i'm trying to increase the file descriptors on my valinux server from 1024 to
4096 with no luck :(

i've followed a few different paths like those described on

http://www.avana.net/~ventura/docs/linux/linux-fd-tweak.html

and  

http://www.volano.com/linux.html (towards bottom)

with no success

does anyone have any suggestions or known solutions?
