well, I would say that EVERY POSSIBLE effort should be made so that
you don't need to.
if it makes sense: check for the capabilities of the system (presence
of the libraries etc.).
also, there are maybe 50 linux distributions, some of them very
similar to others, some of them very short-lived, I can imagine that it
would be syziphos (spelling?) effort...
also note that people tend to customize the system and it might not be
easy to recognize two redhat clones... or slackware - fairly plain
vanilla system, most people change everything (you might find traces of
initial installation or some such stuff)...
