[svlug] What Linux distro is this??

Hello,

How can I figure out, with a shell script, the Linux distro installed
in a certain Linux system??

I don't need to have the shell script ready to use, I can write it (I
only mentioned it as additional info). I just need to know how one can
safely figure out the Linux distro installed in a specific Linux
system.

For instance, I know that Red Hat has the file /etc/redhat-release .
So, if this file is present, I _know_ that this is a Red Hat install
(disregard, of course, the cases where the sysadmin touches this file
just to foul you ;).

Is there something similar for all other Linux distros?!?!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Ivan
