For starters, I believe you'll want to read
http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/kdefaq-9.html#ss9.4 .

One suspects that "KDE-compliance" isn't all _that_ important in a
window manager (all these K-apps are just X clients, after all), so just
editing the startkde script to specify any window manager of your
choosing will probably work.

I have no idea how to "hide" KDE desktop icons.
