I use KDE mostly, but then I'm keeping up with the KDE2 development.
I use GNOME mostly when the kde isn't running, and AfterStep from
time to time. I have an .xinitrc which handily lets me choose between
window managers -- all I need to do is edit it, comment out one line,
and take the comment off another line.

I didn't like Redhat's window manager setup that well -- it seems
too convoluted. A simple .xinitrc is a lot easier to manage (like I
said, I can quickly edit it) rather than a series of links all over
the place.

I gave focus follows mouse a try. I didn't like it, too hard to
control.

Part of that is the server itself -- X seems to want to keep
growing.

Just X by itself, or all the processes that are started when you
start X? (window manager, netscrape, etc.)?

KDE/gnome gives you that, but so does AfterStep. I have several
[kc]onsoles open, but I also use xterms. Even if the WM is
bloated, I have the best of both worlds running gnome or KDE
with a couple of xterms or consoles running. I'm fairly comfortable
on the command line, so a lot of the time I'm running commands from
there instead of using the filemanager to do so. At the same time, it's
neat to just drag a file to xmms, or to have both local and remote
directory windows open, and just transfer a file by dragging the file
object from one window to the other.
