[svlug] amixer question

I enjoy using the alsa sound drivers under linux with my laptop.  I
also use it to play mp3s while I am working.  The annoying part that I
can't figure out is what to do with the "beep" that I get with ^G in a
terminal or other events.

I have tried "xset b off", but that doesn't do it.  Is there another X
or amixer setting (besides "amixer set Master Mute") that will cut out
the beep but leave xmms happy?
