[svlug] using USB DSL modems

Hello, I've just moved to the Bay Area, and I've inherited a computer running
win98 and a DSL line from pac bell that uses a USB modem (Alcatel Efficient
Networks SpeedStream 4060). I'd like to get linux using the DSL line as soon as possible.

Is this possible with my current hardware? Has anyone succeeded in using Linux
w/ one of these USB modems?

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could give me some hints. Even just knowing
that someone has succeeded would help greatly. Otherwise, I may just see if I
can exchange the USB modem for one that delivers ethernet.

Many thanks,

-chris

[Background: I've read the USB howto and the modems-howto and I've set up
firewalls/IP masq before on ethernet networks before. Also, I've compiled
kernel 2.4.0-test2 w/ USB support modules of all types and I've looked at some
of the PPP over ethernet packages. I'd probably describe myself as an
"intermediate level" linux sysadmin.]
