Well, I'll take exception on the design of qmail. This doesn't mean I'm
defending sendmail though. I think anything that requires as much
convolution to get/keep working as qmail doesn't "work well." That said,
you weren't talking qmail. It just has left a bad taste in my mouth.
I also don't like the unfree license. This doesn't mean I don't use unfree
software (I do), just the combination baggage is a bit much for me.

I have a saying about assholes: Everyone can be an asshole. What matters
is not that fact, but, like in music, frequency, amplitude and duration.
